She is presently a researcher at the Planning, Traffic and Safety Division of the Department of Transportation, in LNEC - National Laboratory for Civil Engineering. Her area of expertise and focus on the last years is on road safety, namely on road infrastructure corrective measures, geographical information systems and accident prediction models, and has participated in several research projects and proposals in these areas. Dr Vieira Gomes is also LNEC‘s representative at ECTRI (European Conference of Transport Research Institutes) WG Security and Risk Management. Some of the most relevant projects where she participated were: • ITF/OECD/FIA project: 2015-present: A methodology for benchmarking road safety performance in selected Latin American countries. • ANSR (Autoridade Nacional de Segurança Rodoviária) project: 2013-2014 - Portuguese mainland road network safety performance indicator. • CML (Camara Municipal de Lisboa) project: 2013 – Lisbon’s road accident geographical data base update and Identification of high accident risk sites. • International research projects (EU R&D Transport Projects): - 2009/2011:RISMET - Road Infrastructure Safety Management Evaluation Tools (ERANET program); - 2004/2008 - SAFETY-NET - The New European Road Safety Observatory; - 2004/ 2006 - SUNFLOWER+6 - Comparative Study of the Development of Road Safety in Nine European Countries; - 2002/2005 - FORMAT “Fully Optimised Road Maintenance”. • Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation financed research project: 2005/2009 - IRUMS – Safer roads in urban areas, project financed by FCT (POCI/TRA/58259/2004), with the development of tools that allow the inclusion of safety aspects in the intervention process in urban transport networks. Within this work several accident prediction models were developed for urban areas.
